‘Opus’ Trailer: Ayo Edebiri & John Malkovich Star In A24 Horror Film Meditating On Cult Of Celebrity

A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Opus, its horror film starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich, which is set to hit theaters nationwide March 14 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. Marking the first feature from writer-director Mark Anthony Green, Opus watches as a young writer named Ariel (Edebiri) is invited to the remote compound of Moretti (Malkovich), a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan. In the trailer, Ariel learns that there’s “a rumor flying around that Moretti’s back,” before being invited to an “exclusive listening experience” he’s putting on. Joined by a colleague, played by The White Lotus breakout Murray Bartlett, she travels via a tour bus dubbed The Debutante to a culty compound, for what is said to be a “once-in-a-lifetime gathering.” There, Ariel is told that Moretti “requires that everyone be shaven” and is asked, “how’s the lady garden?” More creepiness then ensues, involving the likes of marionettes and hidden cameras. “Mr. Moretti will be playing the greatest album of modern times — future times, all times, really,” Ariel and company are told. “And there is more to come. So much more.” Produced and financed by A24, Opus also stars Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), Young Mazino (Beef) and Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon). Collin Creighton and Brad Weston produced for Makeready, along with Poppy Hanks and Jelani Johnson for Macro Film Studios, and Josh Bachove. Macro’s Charles D. King exec produced alongside Sara Newkirk Simon, as well as musical artists The-Dream and Nile Rodgers, who penned original songs for the film. Last venturing into horror with Heretic, the Hugh Grant hit from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, A24’s slate for this year currently also includes Paolo Sorrentino’s coming-of-age drama Parthenope (February 7), Isaiah Saxon’s fantasy adventure The Legend of Ochi (February 28), Rungano Nyoni’s darkly comedic drama On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (March 7), Alex Scharfman’s horror comedy Death of a Unicorn (March 28) starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and Josh Safdie’s competitive ping pong pic Marty Supreme (December 25) starring Timothée Chalamet.
