In a world of naked dresses, did one take it too far?

It was arguably the biggest red carpet trend of 2024, dominating the Academy Awards, the Met Gala and everything else in between. The naked dress — embraced by celebrities ranging from Elle Fanning to Kim Kardashian, Doja Cat to Charlize Theron — has become an eyebrow-raising red carpet fixture. At last year’s Vanity Fair Oscars after party, we saw how nudity could be both angelic (as demonstrated by Jennifer Lawerence’s sheer, Fall-Winter 1996 Givenchy empire-waist dress hand-embroidered with clovers) and risqué (such as Charli XCX’s gauzy yellow nipple-baring gown, also made by Givenchy.) But at Sunday’s Grammys, only one naked dress was turning heads. While most guests opted for muted palettes and pared-back styling amid tributes to victims of Los Angeles’ devastating wildfires, Bianca Censori took a different approach. Censori arrived at the event alongside husband Kanye West — who now goes by Ye. If the Australian model’s long feather coat seemed uncharacteristically demur...

2025 Grammy Awards highlights: Political statements, Beyoncé's album of the year win

After several wildfires ravaged Los Angeles for nearly a week, there were moments when it seemed as if going on with the annual glitz and glam of the Grammys show might not be the most appropriate move. But by incorporating a fundraising effort with onstage salutes to firefighting heroes, the annual celebration of music's biggest artists managed to deftly walk that sensitivity line Sunday while adding several memorable moments to 67 years and counting of Grammy Awards spectacle After some scandalous buzz from the red carpet (where Ye showed up with his essentially nude wife Bianca Censori to reporters brushing off Babyface for a Chappell Roan interview), the show itself stuck to its bread and butter of celebrating music with outstanding performances from the likes of Billie Eilish, Charli XCX and Doechii. Let's revisit some of the top moments from the night, including Beyoncé finally taking home the gold for album of the year and Roan calling out music labels for not s...

The ‘Emilia Pérez’ backlash, explained

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” is an Oscar contender unlike any other. It’s a musical, a trans parable, and a Mexico-set melodrama, all combined into one unique amalgamation by an international filmmaking team. l And just as singularly, it’s a best picture front-runner that, it sometimes seems, no one likes. On one hand, “Emilia Pérez” is one of the most celebrated films of the year. It triumphed at the Golden Globes, earned 11 BAFTA nominations and landed 13 Academy Award nominations. Only three movies, ever, have scored more. “He drank up the world like a sponge,” says Rebecca Moore, Buckley’s first girlfriend in New York and entree to the East Village art scene in the 1990s, says in the film. As another former girlfriend, musician Joan Wasser, puts it: “He heard the whole of his person in the music.” On the other hand, “Emilia Pérez” has been lampooned for its tonal extremes, criticized for its depiction of Mexican culture and engulfed in controversy sin...

Selena Gomez’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ co-star called her a ‘rich rat’ amid Hailey Bieber drama

The Karla Sofía Gascón controversy continues. The Oscar nominee, who is under fire for offensive tweets that have resurfaced, went after Selena Gomez on X (formerly Twitter) before they starred in “Emilia Perez” together. According to the Latin Times, Gascón, 52, trashed Gomez, 32, in a since-deleted tweet from Oct. 2022, where she commented on a news story about Gomez and Hailey Bieber taking a photo together at the Annual Academy Museum Gala. She’s a rich rat who plays the poor bitch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife,” Gascón reportedly wrote about Gomez. At the time of Gascón’s reported tweet, Gomez and Hailey, 28, came together at the Annual Academy Museum Gala to shut down rumors of their alleged feud. Gomez dated Justin Bieber for eight years before they split for good in 2018. Later that year, Justin, 30, got married to Hailey. Last year, Gomez, Gascón and Zoe Saldana starred in “Emilia Perez” which is up for a lea...

Justin Baldoni ramps up Blake Lively feud with new website

Justin Baldoni has published a website amid a battle over allegations of what happened on the set of his and Blake Lively's film, It Ends With Us. The website contains Baldoni's amended complaint and a timeline of events related to the case. The two stars played a couple in the hit film, which came out last year, but have since become embroiled in an increasingly bitter legal dispute. “He drank up the world like a sponge,” says Rebecca Moore, Buckley’s first girlfriend in New York and entree to the East Village art scene in the 1990s, says in the film. As another former girlfriend, musician Joan Wasser, puts it: “He heard the whole of his person in the music.” Lively, 37, sued Baldoni, 41, in December, accusing him of sexual harassment and a smear campaign. Baldoni is counter-suing Lively and her husband, the actor Ryan Reynolds, on claims of civil extortion, defamation and invasion of privacy. Baldoni is also suing the New York Times for libel. Both parties strong...

Dog Man’ Wagging Away on Top With $10.8 Million Opening Day, ‘Companion’ Sparks in Second

Image
Who let “Dog Man” out? Universal Pictures did, and the party is nice, the party is pumpin’ for the studio, as the DreamWorks Animation caper earned $10.8 million across Friday and preview screenings. That’s the biggest opening day gross yet for this still very young year. Playing in 3,885 locations, “Dog Man” is now fetching what’s projected to be a $35 million opening weekend. That’d handily outperform the $23 million debut for “Captain America: The First Epic Movie,” which adapted another series of graphic novels by children’s author Dav Pilkey and was released in 2017 by the now-Disney-owned 20th Century Fox. That’s a very good start for “Dog Man,” which already had an achievable threshold for success being produced at a $40 million budget, a much more modest investment than most studio animated features. Reviews lean positive, but audiences flipped for it, with moviegoer survey firm Cinema Score polling opening crowds to a glowing A grade. “Dog Man” is benefiting from being the...

Frankenstein A Brief Timeline of Guillermo del Toro’s 20-Years-in-the-Making Horror Movie

During the Next on Netflix preview event this week, the writer-director appeared in a video message to tease his long-awaited, even longer-in-the-works adaptation of Frankenstein. While the filmmaker has said a trailer for the film won’t arrive until this summer, Netflix did reveal a first-look image of Oscar Isaac as the titular, and legendary, mad scientist (see above). “This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years,” del Toro said in the video, as reported by Variety. “I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein.” As he said that last part, he pointed to the many Frankenstein figures and collectibles among the collection in his Frankenstein room in his famed Bleak House. Del Toro also showed off some footage that included Isaac’s Victor Frankenstein “facing off with Mia Goth as a seemingly well-to-do aristocrat” as well as Jacob Elordi’s Frankenstein’s monster, who appare...
